The Keys to a Successful Startup – Maximizing Efficiency and Growing Your Company

Entrepreneur Center

Every successful company started with an idea.  Michael Burcham, CEO of the Entrepreneur Center and Professor at Vanderbilt University and Vanderbilt’s Owen Graduate School of Management, shared at E|SPACES Cool Springs May 10th how to turn your ideas into reality.

1. Only Use a Legitimate Business Model

Investors want to know up front what business model you’re using and what other companies have succeeded using that model. Think outside the box of your industry and consider successful companies in entirely different industries than yours then figure out how to apply the principles of their model to your startup.

2. Save the Writing of Plans for Later

Eager to write your business plans?  First begin with your financial model.  How is your shiny object going to make money?  What problems are you solving for your customers?  List your assumptions and your facts – once you have 50-60% of the facts nailed down you’ve got a good financial model and are ready to move forward.

3. Frame Your Idea

What is going to drive your revenue?  Who is your customer? How are you going to get the product to your customers and keep your margin in check? How do you cause your customers to fall in love with your product?

4. Build Your Business Model from the Ground Up

Study your competition. Who are your competitors?  What models are they using?  What needs are they failing to meet?  What are the pain points of their customers?  Talk to your potential customers – find out what is actually important to them – usually this is different than you originally thought.  “The pain to switch to your solution has to easier than staying.”

5. Know Your Margin in the Industry

6. Stay Focused on Magnetic North

Know your customers and adjust your product to meet their changing needs and desires.  Maintain a competitive edge in your market.

The best entrepreneurs see ordinary problems, put together a tested business model, and execute it well.  Even a mediocre idea can turn into a profitable business if executed well. Learning Series with David Baker

This tailored presentation will center on the foundational role of your positioning in the marketplace, how that can help you identify the ideal client, what product/service offerings would be appropriate (especially if they are “packaged”), and what employees you’ll need to fulfill those brand promises.

David will end with some very specific suggestions on finding prospective clients with short- and long-term techniques, none of which compromise your role as an expert. There will be time for Q/A during the presentation.

David C. Baker, a resident of Nashville for 13 years, is a $1 million solo-consulting entity that serves marketing firms worldwide. That covers advertising, design, public relations, interactive, and in-house departments that do one of those four things.

ReCourses, Inc. has done a Total Business Review for 650+ firms over the last 19 years, and David speaks at ca. 30 conferences a year, in addition to his yearly 9 seminars at the Frist Center.

David has written three well-received books (you’ll get a free copy of one of them just for attending), and his work has been covered in the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, Fast Company, Inc., Forbes, and BusinessWeek. In total, he’s written for 40 different publications.

Learning Series: Graphic Facilitation Boot Camp with Peter Durand

7:30 AM- Lite Breakfast and Networking, 8 AM- Presentation

Where: E|SPACES

4322 Harding Pike, suite 417

Nashville, TN 37205

Description

This 60 minute workshop is the short version of a hands-on basic skills course in graphic facilitation. Effective communication can be quite challenging, especially when making a presentation or giving a speech. In order for the communication to be effective, you must keep the attention of the listeners and deliver the information in such a way that it is fully understood. One of the most effective ways to get your message across and make it memorable is with visual aids.

Peter Durand

Peter is co-founder and creative director of Alphachimp Studio Inc. Established in Chicago in 1998, this Nashville-based husband-and-wife company deploys a national network of graphic recorders and facilitators to support major corporate events and intimate strategy sessions for companies large and small. Early members of E|SPACES, the Durands incubated and launched Become a Rockstar Scribe at School or Work, a successful online course with students in North America, Europe and Asia Pacific.
