You Are the Business Plan

It takes a lot of time and effort to write good business plan. Sometimes I wonder if all that time and effort could be better spent actually starting the business rather than researching and writing and editing. It really is a lot of work!

So, if I want to start a new business, do I have to write a business plan?

It clearly depends on the nature of the business you are starting.  Instead of spending months writing a business plan, sometimes it is better to lay out your plan in a simple concept paper–three or four pages. Scoping out what you plan to do helps you think through the process and is highly recommended.

Then get to it. If it seems like it is beginning to work, you can always go back and write a detailed plan. If not, you have not wasted a lot of time.

If your business requires capital that you are going to ask others to put at risk, unless it is a small amount coming from close family and friends, a business plan is a must. People who invest want to know that you have very carefully thought through the concept and have looked at every important aspect of the business.

  • Can you clearly describe what you plan to do?
  • What is your product or service?
  • What is unique about the product or service?
  • Who are the customers?
  • How are you going to sell the product or service?
  • Who is the competition?
  • What are the barriers to entry?
  • What is the experience of the management team?
  • What do the financials look like?
  • How much capital is required?
  • What are the risks?
  • How do I get paid back?

You have to be able to answer each of these, plus a few others thrown in for good measure, in great detail. Now that doesn’t mean that the investor will always read the complete business plan, but you better be prepared to answer any question that is asked. The business plan is critical in your preparation for this important exam.

When I write or read a business plan, the one thing I know for sure is that the business will not turn out exactly as the plan predicts. But it is a road map and critical planning tool.

So, if you do not need outside investors, write a concept paper and spend your time starting the business. Do not waste months writing a detailed plan.

If you need investors, write the plan. Do the research and learn the material. The test is not the quality of the plan. The test is do you know the business well enough and are you experienced enough to make the right adaptations when the plan falls apart.

Ultimately, there is only one important section in a business plan–The Management Team.  The secret is that YOU are the business plan–not the document–and YOU are the focus of investors’ interest.

Christopher Rand Added to Member Council

Christopher Rand is the latest addition to the E|SPACES Member Council, according to Jim Lackey, Chair of the Council. Christopher is a Co-Founder of TriStar Technology Ventures, which focuses on companies in the area of healthcare innovation. TriStar’s Technology Fund is one of the six initial TNInvestcos, set up to invest in Tennessee small and start-up businesses.

Prior to TriStar, Christopher was the Manager of New Venture Development in Vanderbilt’s Office of Technology Transfer and Enterprise Development. In that role, he was involved in licensing Vanderbilt intellectual property and working with start-up companies. He is a board member of the Nashville Capital Network, the Nashville Technology Council, and the Nashville Entrepreneur Center.

E|SPACES is a new work and meeting environment for mobile, connected professionals, many of whom will be entrepreneurs in start-up and early stage businesses. Conveniently located in the new Hill Center at Belle Meade, it provides professionals and small companies a business address and phone number, and a place to work and network, as well as an ideal place for meetings.

In his role on the Member Council, Christopher will provide feedback on all aspects of the E|SPACES experience. Prior to opening in July, the full Member Council will be in place to help E|SPACES redefine the concept of the office and meeting space for today’s new generation of professionals.

Mobile, Connected Professionals–87 Days

Only 87 days until mobile, connected professionals in Nashville have a new home.  So what is a mobile connected professional?  It is pretty simple–they move around a lot in their work and they stay connected to their colleagues and clients through the Web and cell technology.  They are consultants, sales reps, writers, designers, real estate agents, drug reps, entrepreneurs and even lawyers and accountants.  Virtually every area of business and the professions has a growing number of mobile, connected professionals.

Today, worked on the finances  and met and signed off on changes to the space.  Tomorrow will have a planning session.  Continuing the countdown.

Opening Countdown 90 Days

We are a day closer to the opening of E|SPACES in Nashville.  I met this morning with a friend in the music marketing business.  He really liked the concept and especially liked not having to sign a lease and the fact that parking is free.  He thought it was a good value and immediately identified two people for whom he thought it would be a fit.  He thought we should offer support for entrepreneurs as they work to get new businesses off the ground.

While we describe the target for E|SPACES as mobile, connected professionals, we expect many will be entrepreneurs.  They do not need the burden of entering into a long term lease and can really benefit from being around others who have been through or are going through the process.

We continue to make progress on the Web site.  There is still work to be done–even misspelled words according to Josh Bowling.  It is beginning to look like a Web site and by the middle of next week should be in good shape.

Met this afternoon with Jeff San George of  Pineapple PC, www.pineapple-pc.com, and began the process to develop integrated  social media.  We are going to work hard, with Jeff’s help, to optimize the site for search engines.
